WE SERVE

EAST GRINSTEAD &
DISTRICT LIONS CLUB

Why did we join the LIONS'

I became involved with the East Grinstead Club a couple of years before becoming a member in 1991, I helped with putting up the road signs for May Fayre. Whilst at the event I read a flyer which told me that the whole event had been organised by a Club of 22 members this prompted me to join and I have no regrets.

In June 1993 I was elected Secretary, at that time all the minutes of meetings were in hard copy and posted to all members, as were all the forms needed for District, Multiple District and Head Quarters, which is in Oak Brook. Illinois, USA. My how it has all changed as everything is done over the internet now even those who said a short time ago "I will never get a PC" have succumbed. As the Secretary you are the main link between the Club and the wider association. You help all Club members understand that they are part of a huge network of like-minded people who are making the world a better place. In the Lions year 2005/2006 the European Clubs reported completing projects: Aid to the Elderly - 42%. Culture and Arts 32% Scholarships 29% Youth Recreation and Sports 24% and Recreation 21%.

Being a Lion has been very rewarding, taking part in the various activities with my wife and making so many new friends. In June 2002 after nine years as secretary the Club presented me with a Certificate of Appreciation and in 2005 I was presented with a Melvin Jones Fellowship one of the highest awards in Lions.
