Like
all Lions Clubs throughout the world friendship is at the very heart of
our Club; Our Motto is “If it’s not fun it’s not worth doing”. By having
FUN and COMRADESHIP we are able to enjoy being able to put something back
into the community.

We have two main committees: Community Service: who consider projects and other good causes in the community. We are always actively seeking projects to help the local community and if you have any ideas and believe the Lions can help please contact the Club Secretary. We support the MedicAlert charity and we will sponsor membership where there is a need. For information MedicAlert East Grinstead. Since February 2005 the Club has issued 2400 "Message in a Bottle" bottles through Doctor's surgeries, Warden assisted accommodation, Pensioners' Association, Local Pharmacies, Queen Victoria Hospital and Churches. The Emergency Services all know about the bottles which can be life savers. If you live alone and would like a bottle for yourself or friend give Alan Howson a call on 321824. East Grinstead Lions Club set up a 'Spectacle Recycling Scheme' whereby discarded spectacles are collected on a monthly rota from opticians, doctor surgeries and the eye Clinic at Queen Victoria Hospital. The spectacles are shipped through a special arrangement with Parcel Force to the Chichester Lions. They are sorted and forwarded to the Lions International spectacle centre where they are graded and packaged ready for despatch to Lions in Third World Countries. We estimate that we locally collect about 4000 spectacles. We also support LIBRA which is a Lions' 105SE Charity that sponsors research into blood diseases e.g. Leukemia, Sicle cell disease, at King's College Hospital. We provide holidays for needy folk at our own Caravan at the Martello Tower Holiday site Pevensey. This is funded by the weekly bookstall. In January/February we have a concert and tea party for up to 250 Senior Citizens. In May an "It's A Knockout" event, is organised, for disabled individuals where up to ten teams of 8 compete in a selection of games. Fund Raising: whose task is to raise the money to fund the projects; 95% of all money raised goes back into the local community and the remaining 5% goes towards International Lions Projects. The main fund raising events are East Grinstead Mayfair held on the first Monday in May. This event not only raises about £6000 for Lions Charities but is also a catalyst for local charities to raise money for their own charity. Another event organised by the Club which benefits local Clubs and Charities is the Sponsored Swim, up to 42 Organisations can enter teams of 6 to swim for 25 mins. 50% of the sponsorship is for their own organisations and has been used to buy new football gear for the under9 Football Club, Student sponsorship to Tanzania, new camping gear, a defibrillator for King's Centre and many other good causes. Just before Christmas a raffle is run, raising around £2500, to pay for the annual Senior Citizens party. The weekly bookstall sale of paper backs raises enough money to maintain and run the 6 berth caravan at Pevensey. Our hot dog stall is often required at other events and raises more money for the funds. We also have a supporters "200 Club" which is open to all at a cost of £24 for full years membership or this can be paid Quarterly or Half yearly. Apart from raising money for Charity use, members are eligible for the twice yearly star draws held in March and September and two other draws in June & December.
